Cork is one of the most extraordinary natural materials on the planet: elastic, waterproof, fireproof, biodegradable, renewable. And Italy is among the main world producers, third after Portugal and Spain. Most Italians don't know that a few kilometers from some of the most touristy destinations in Italy grow forests of cork oaks ( Quercus suber ) with trees that are 200-300 years old and that are "peeled" every 9 years without being cut down. This is the guide that explains it all.

Italy produces about 10,000-12,000 tons of raw cork a year, 6-8% of world production. Of this total, Sardinia accounts for 65-70%, concentrated above all in the Gallura (province of Sassari/Olbia-Tempio). The municipality of Calangianus is the Italian capital of cork: most of the processing companies are based here, and here the centuries-old know-how of this industry is concentrated.
The cork-oak forests in Sardinia cover about 80,000-100,000 hectares (AGRIS Sardegna data). They aren't compact forests, they're "agro-silvopastoral" systems that in Sardinia are called sugherete: sparse trees over pastures where sheep and pigs graze under the canopies. A multiple production system that has worked for millennia without the need for fertilizers or pesticides.

The cork oak can be stripped (peeled) only after it has reached at least 25 years of age and has a minimum circumference of 60 cm. The first stripping, called demaschiatura, produces a poor-quality raw cork called "male cork." From the second cut onward, every 9 years, you get the superior "female cork," with a more regular cellular structure.
The operation is carried out in summer (June-August) with axes and special wooden levers, a spiral cut is made around the trunk and then the bark is lifted off in large slabs. An expert worker can strip 1-2 trees an hour. The oak isn't damaged, the bark will completely re-form in the following 9 years. The same tree can be stripped 15-20 times over the course of its life.
The cork slabs are boiled to soften and clean them, then left to season in the air for 6-12 months. Then they're cut into strips the size of the stopper and punched. A standard bottle stopper has a diameter of 24 mm and a length of 45 mm, it's obtained from a single piece of natural cork (a first-choice stopper) or from pressed cork granules (a technical stopper, less prized but more uniform).
Sardinia doesn't only produce stoppers, it produces cork granules for thermal and acoustic insulation, floors, shoes, design objects, insulating panels for the aerospace industry. The sustainable building market is reviving cork as the material of the future: it has thermal conductivity similar to glass wool, it's breathable, it doesn't rot, it doesn't burn.

The Tuscan Maremma is the second Italian producing zone, with about 20,000 hectares of cork groves. The area of the Parco della Maremma (Alberese, GR) has beautiful forests, accessible with the park's guided visits (€10, booking www.parco-maremma.it). The Capalbio-Capodimonte area has private cork groves not always accessible.
A smaller but significant presence: Aspromonte (RC), Sila (CS), Nebrodi (ME) have historic cork forests, often integrated with mixed woods of holm oak and Turkey oak. Less industrialized than the Gallura, more "wild."
The Romans used cork to seal wine amphorae, Horace and Pliny the Elder write about it. The modern stopper spread in 17th-century Europe with glass bottles. Today the debate between the natural cork stopper and the screw cap (Stelvin) is alive in the wine industry: cork allows a gradual micro-oxygenation of the wine during aging, impossible with the screw cap. But defective stoppers can cause "cork taint" (TCA, trichloroanisole), a note of mold/wet cardboard that ruins the wine.

The most extensive cork forests in Italy are in the Gallura (northeastern Sardinia), with their epicenter in the municipality of Calangianus (OT). The total area of the Sardinian cork groves exceeds 80,000 hectares. In Tuscany, the Maremma (between Orbetello, Capalbio, and Manciano) has about 20,000 hectares. Both zones are easily reachable: Calangianus is 40 minutes from Olbia airport. The Tuscan Maremma is 2 hours from Rome.
No. The cork oak ( Quercus suber ) grows naturally throughout Mediterranean Italy: Sardinia (the most important), Tuscany (the Maremma), Lazio (the hilly Tyrrhenian areas), Calabria, Sicily (the Nebrodi, the Peloritani), and to a lesser extent Campania and Basilicata. It doesn't grow north of Liguria, it requires mild winters without prolonged frosts.
A first-choice natural cork stopper (class 1, no visual defects) costs the producer 15-40 cents each for table-wine bottles, and can reach €1-3 for premium 54 mm stoppers used for aging wines. A technical stopper (granule agglomerate) costs 3-8 cents. Portugal produces 50% of the world's cork and dominates the high-quality stopper market.
Italian cork oaks live on average 150-200 years, with exceptional specimens reaching 400-500 years. In Sardinia there are monumental trees with circumferences over 3 meters, probably 300-400 years old. The cork oak resists fires better than any other Italian tree species: the thick bark (the cork itself) protects it up to temperatures of 900°C, allowing survival even in intense fires.
In Calangianus you find shops and showrooms with the entire range of cork products: bags, wallets, coasters, decorative plaques, sample insulating panels, single collector's stoppers. The prices are lower than in the city shops. A natural cork bag costs €30-80 on site, €60-120 in the Rome or Florence boutiques. Italian cork is distinguished by the coarser grain compared to the Portuguese, a visual characteristic, not a defect.
A half-day itinerary for the cork forests in the Gallura: start from Olbia (40 minutes by car heading northwest) toward Calangianus. The SP 13 between Calangianus and Aggius crosses magnificent cork forests, park in any pull-off on the roadside and walk among the trees. In Calangianus, visit the Museo del Sughero and the Consorzio Sughericoltori. In Aggius, the town has a small Ethnographic Museum with a section dedicated to cork processing. Lunch in one of the restaurants of Aggius (grilled lamb and local cheeses, €15-25). Free afternoon in Tempio Pausania or return to Olbia for the evening.

Sardinian cork is excellent for granulate (panels, floors, insulation) and for medium-quality stoppers. Sardinia has quantity, 65% of Italian production, but not always the top quality of Portugal. The Sardinian companies often process the cork at mid-cycle: they harvest raw cork and sell to the Portuguese or Spanish processors.

The Sardinian cork industry employs about 4,000-5,000 direct workers and generates a turnover of €80-100 million a year. The crisis was the screw-cap wine, which reduced the demand for cork stoppers. The sector's response: diversification toward sustainable building (insulating panels), fashion (shoes, accessories), design, and luxury packaging. Cork as an alternative to plastic in food packaging is a growing market. The transition isn't easy for the small family companies of Calangianus, but it's happening.
While the world looks for alternatives to plastic, cork has silently become one of the most sought-after materials by the sustainable design industry. The Swedish giant IKEA has started using cork panels in some flooring lines. Nike has launched shoes with a recycled-cork sole. Tesla uses cork in the interior linings of some vehicles. The aerospace industry uses granulated cork in space capsules, the same technology used in the Apollo 11 capsule of 1969.
For the Italian cork forests, this is a historic opportunity. The Sardinian and Tuscan cork groves don't only produce stoppers, they produce one of the few natural materials with the physical properties of cork: thermal insulation, acoustic insulation, elasticity, waterproofing, total biodegradability, renewability every 9 years. The global cork market is worth about €1.4 billion a year and is growing 4-5% annually.
Yes. In Calangianus, several producers sell directly to the public: coasters, bags, shoes, decorative panels. The producer prices are 30-50% lower than the city souvenir shops. The Consorzio del Sughero della Sardegna (Via Roma, Calangianus) can provide a list of producers that accept direct visits. The Calangianus cork fair is held every year in June, two days of exhibitions, tastings (the producers often offer local cheese and wine), and direct sale.
The best period to visit the cork forests in Sardinia is June-July, when the harvest (stripping) is underway in the companies that operate. You can watch the operation in the private forests by reservation. Outside this period, the forests are visitable all year, the cork oak is evergreen, the Gallura forests are beautiful in all seasons. In August the temperatures exceed 35°C in the inland cork groves, intense heat, it's advisable to visit early in the morning.
Cork has a negative carbon balance, the cork oaks absorb more CO2 than their production emits. A natural cork stopper absorbs in total about 309 g of CO2 in its life cycle (the tree's growth, production, end of life). A plastic stopper emits about 10 times more. An aluminum screw cap emits 26 times more. This is why "premium" winemakers and those attentive to sustainability are returning to natural cork despite the higher costs.
The Italian cork forests provide economically calculable ecosystem services: carbon sequestration (~4.5 t CO2/ha/year in the Sardinian cork groves), prevention of soil erosion, maintenance of biodiversity (the Sardinian cork groves host 15-20 species of nesting birds not found in pine or eucalyptus woods), production of pasture for extensive livestock farming. A 2019 CNR study calculated that the value of the ecosystem services of the Sardinian cork groves exceeds the commercial value of the extracted cork by 3 times, but none of these services appears in the regional GDP.
